Many early childhood educators and parents recognise that the first three years of life are crucial to a child's develooment. Although the average age of diagnosis is between 3 and 6 years old, the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that's check-ups between 18 and 24 months should include developmental screening for Autism for early detection.

DEFINITION

Autism is a bio-neurological disorder that is observable in early childhood with symptoms of abnormal self-absorption, characterised by lack of response to other humans and by limited ability or disinclination to communicate and socialize. It is a mental condition in which a person is unable to communicate or form relationships with others.

CAUSES OF AUTISM

As there is not one single type of Autism, there is no one cause of this disorder. Some of the more popular hypothesis include the following:
~ Genetic: Autism tends to run in families  and children who have a first-degree relative such as a parent or sibling with Autism are at higher risks for developing the disorder. However, science has identified a small number of rare genes or genetic mutations that are sufficient enough to cause Autism on their own. Most cases of Autism though are a combination of risk genes and environmental factors present in early development.
~ Physical: Boys are three to four timea more likely than girls to develop Autism. Additionally, brain imaging studies have shown that there are structural and functional differences in specific area of the brain.
~ Risk factors: These factors alone do not cause Autism, but in combination with genetic risk factors they increase risk.

SYMPTOMS OF AUTISM

The symptoms of Autism are generally apparent after the time a child turns a age three, but can be diagonised at a later age. Symptoms do vary from person to person and no two symptom presentations are the same. Some of the common symptoms of Autism include:
